2011
marked the fifrth season of Intermediate B lacrosse in
Surrey, a program which extends the box lacrosse
experience for those 16 to 18 year-old players who have
graduated from the Midget ranks and either could not
crack the line-up of an Intermediate A team or choose
not to play at that level.
We have had a very successful program since its
inception, with teams making the playoffs in three of
our first four seasons, and Rebels players named to the
league All Star Team twice (Jeff Geyer - 2008, Brad
Olson - 2009) and boasting one league MVP in 2009 (Brad
Olson).
We have had excellent volunteer support from parents,
players and other family members – something that is
vital to the success of a non-profit organization, and
again finished on the positive side of the ledger sheet
financially with the help of sponsors and fundraising.

Things are again looking promising for the upcoming 2012
season!
The Surrey Rebels are members of the British Columbia
Intermediate Lacrosse League "B" Division, which is
divided into a North Conference comprised of Burnaby,
Coquitlam, New Westminster, North Shore, Port Coquitlam,
Port Moody and Ridge Meadows, and the South Conference
comprised of Delta, Langley, North Delta, Richmond,
Surrey and Semiahmoo. The league is sanctioned
under the BCLA Senior Directorate.
The season runs from late April to late July, with
typically 2 games per week making up an 18 game
schedule. The 3 teams emerging from the league
playoffs advance to the Provincial Championships, which
are held during the BC Day Long Weekend in August.
The Intermediate Rebels are members of the Surrey
Lacrosse Association (SLA). Along with the Junior
B Rebels (for players aged 18 to 21), we make up the
Senior Divisions of the SLA and are operated
independently from a registration and financial basis
from the Minor Divisions of the SLA. We have
formal affiliations with the Midget and Junior Divisions
of SLA regarding one-game player permits. We do
not have any affiliation with South Fraser Stickmen
Lacrosse.
We are always recruiting for volunteer positions and if
you, our somebody you know, may be interested in being
part of a winning organization, contact us at
int_rebels@surreylacrosse.com.
Players returning for their second year of Intermediate
and those graduating from Midget will be contacted prior
to tryout camp to confirm interest and availability.
For those of you new to senior lacrosse, please note
that there are a number of subtle differences over the
minor (Midget and younger) ranks:
1.
Intermediate registration takes place
after tryouts when a player has been selected
and “signed” to a team. BCLA mandates that only 25
players can be signed to an Intermediate B team.
We are anticipating a large amount of players during
tryouts, so it is very important that you pay attention
to your phone messages, e-mail and Surrey Lacrosse
website, attend all scheduled tryout sessions, and come
prepared and ready to play. Coaches will inform
the players as to what will be expected and what they
are looking for during the tryouts.
2.
Tryout/Training camp usually opens in
early March and expected to continue every week until
mid-April, when our regular practice times commence.
3.
All players who live in the City of
Surrey north of 40 Avenue regardless of where they
have played in previous seasons are the “property”
of the Surrey Lacrosse Association for the purposes of
Intermediate B play.
4.
Each player must sign a practice form
(attached) prior to starting official tryouts.
This is strictly for insurance purposes - the form is not
a registration card and does not denote the player
being signed to the team.
5.
If a player has been selected for the team (all 25 positions are up for competition – no spots have
been filled yet), he will be advised by the coaching
personnel of this. The player is then required to
sign a registration card with all personal information
filled out. Parents of those selected players must
also sign the registration card and remit the completed
form to the team manager prior to any game play.
The player has now been signed with the team, meaning
that the player is now officially a member of the Surrey
Rebels Intermediate B Lacrosse Club. The player
may not play for another team unless properly released -
this includes teams in the same association.
6.
If a player has not been selected for
the team, the coaching personnel will inform the player
that he has been “released”, and will explain to him
options for playing in the 2011 season. Coaching
personnel, as well as officers with the Surrey Lacrosse
Association, have the right to release any player at
their discretion during the season.
7.
The deadline for signing players is
midnight, 30 June 2012. Released players from
other clubs may be signed by the 15 July 2012 deadline.
8.
The registration fee for the 2011
season was $300.00 for 23 players and
$150.00 for 2 goaltenders. These
fees were the same as last season despite the loss of
2/3 of our Direct Access Gaming funds from the Province,
which made up 33% of our annual operating budget.
Our budget is highly dependent on registration fees,
corporate sponsorship and other means of fundraising
that the team will have to undertake. The fees are
not subsidized by the Minor Divisions of Surrey Lacrosse
Association. When a player is signed to a team, and prior to any game play, the registration fee
will have to be paid in full.
9.
Included in the registration fee are
one pair of team shorts and warm-up T-shirt, both to
keep, which the player is expected to maintain and wear
to all games.
10.
Our season runs from late April to
late July, with the Provincial Championships held the BC
Day long weekend in August. We will likely have
two games a week (one home and one away) and up to two
practices a week (one indoor and the occasional outdoor
session). Our home game nights are Fridays at
Cloverdale Arena, with the odd Friday game played at
North Surrey Rec Centre or Sunday matinee game played at
Cloverdale Arena due to arena unavailability.
Players are to arrive no later than one hour before game
time, with warm-up to take place 30 minutes prior to
game time. All home games face-off at 8:00pm
(matinees at 1:30pm), with away games typically starting
at either 8:00pm or 8:30pm.
11.
There are a number of subtle rule
changes between our league and what graduating Midget
players may be used to: we play full stop time (3
– 20 minute periods with 10 minute intermissions); if
tied after 60 minutes, there is a 3 minute break
followed by a 10 minute sudden-death overtime (if
tied after overtime, both teams are awarded a point);
the 30 second shot clock does not apply to a team
playing short-handed; and a few others.
Our coaching personnel, dedicated volunteers and the
Surrey Lacrosse Association are very committed to the
development and success of the Intermediate B program,
and we expect the same of all of our players.
Please be sure that you are ready and willing to commit
the amount of time and effort necessary to this level of
lacrosse to make this team succeed.
