Rebels Bounced From Playoffs (21 July 2009)

Like their Junior cousins the week before, the Intermediate Surrey Rebels were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by a team beneath them in the standings, as the 5-13-0 Delta Islanders upset the 11-7-0 Rebels 10-5 in front of a large crowd at Cloverdale Arena Monday night in BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League action at Cloverdale Arena.

Special teams was the Achilles Heel of the Rebels in the game, as they gave up 7 powerplay goals and 2 short handed tallies.  The first powerplay goal surrendered came on a breakaway against the flow of the play with 4.4 seconds left in the first period.  Until that point, Surrey was gradually building momentum, enjoyed a 2-1 lead with goals by Brodie Serka and Derek Kolins, and were stellar on the penalty kill.

Still reeling from the late goal in the previous inning, the Rebels gave up a goal while on a powerplay 4:46 in, and followed that up with a goal against while short-handed at 7:02.  Max Richards got one back on the same powerplay 51 seconds later to cut the deficit to one, and then Ryan Sepka tied the game at 9:12.  The turning point in the game occurred with 7:48 left in the second period when Delta notched its second short-handed goal of the night.  Surrey fell into penalty trouble and the Islanders made them pay, scoring two more powerplay goals in the final 5:40 to take a 7-4 lead into the dressing room.

After a major tongue lashing from coach Padraic Lawrence between periods, the Rebels came out with a bit more jump, but could not convert the effort into quality scoring chances.  Delta capitalized twice on a 4 minute man advantage with 7:55 and 7:20 left to widen the margin to four, but Serka gave the home team hope with his second of the night with 6:57 left.  However, the Islanders held fort and picked up an insurance marker with 2:07 left to send the Rebels to the proverbial golf course.  Assists in the game went to Richards, Serka, Corey Baldwin, Brad Olson, Alex Lamb and Riley Brady-Springer. Clayton Finley went the distance in the Surrey net, and his heroics to keep his team in the game unfortunately could not be converted into a victory.

As with the Juniors, the team played hard over the course of the season and deserved a better result than a first round exit from the playoffs.  Highlights for the season include a respectable second place finish in the BCILL B League South Conference for rookie head coach Lawrence, and having two players in the top 30 league scoring (Brad Olson 22G 38A 60Pts, Max Richards 14G 22A 36Pts), having the top goaltender in the league (Jeff Geyer 89% save percentage).  We have 9 players graduating to Junior for next season (Olson, Richards, Sepka, Conor Campbell, Kyle Wegner, Travis Schmidt, Corey Baldwin, Chris Niemi and Zack Morin), and expect to see all of them at Junior Rebels training camp in early 2010.  We expect the majority of the 15 remaining players to be back for the 2010 season and trust that the majority of graduating Midget players will be out at training camp.

Rebels Drop Regular Season Finale (17 July 2009)

The Surrey Rebels knew prior to the game its playoff fate and went on to drop a 13-8 decision to the South Conference champs, the Richmond Roadrunners, Friday night in BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League action at Cloverdale Arena.  The Rebels finished the regular season with a record of 11-7-0, good for second place in the South.

The Rebels will host the Delta Islanders in an opening round one game sudden death playoff Tuesday, July 21 at Cloverdale Arena, 8:00pm face-off.

Rebels Win Third in a Row (10 July 2009)

After learning that the rival Richmond Roadrunners dropped their second in a row the night before, the Surrey Rebels continued their quest for a first place finish in the South by knocking off the North Shore Indians 10-5 Friday night in BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League action at Cloverdale Arena.

Surrey opened the scoring only 19 seconds in, as Max Richards won the face-off, Derek Kolins scooped up the loose ball and fed Ryan Sepka, who wired home his 18 goal of the season.  Kolins then got his 19th of the year on the powerplay at 3:18 from Richards and Brad Olson to make it 2-0.  The Indians answered with a goal against the flow of the play at 8:01, but Thomas Henry closed the opening inning scoring with his 6th of the season with 5:32 left, from Richards.   Surrey had a wide edge in shots, firing 26 at the North Shore net as opposed to only surrendering only 11.

After giving up a goal 23 seconds into the second period, the Rebels rallied with a pair in a span of 39 seconds - first Richards getting his 13th at 1:22 from Olson, then Sepka picking up his second of the game at 2:01 from Kolins and Richards.  North Shore made it 5-3 at 8:52, but the teams traded goals late in the frame - Sepka completing his hat-trick with 29 seconds left from Olson, then the visitors capitalizing on a turnover with 2 seconds left.  Shots again favoured the Rebels 26-12.

After getting reamed out by coach Padraic Lawrence in the second intermission, the home team came out flying in the third, picking up a pair of Derek Kolins goals while short-handed in the opening 85 seconds - the first unassisted and the second helped by Olson.  The Indians made it 8-5 at 5:36, but the Rebels were determined to put the game away, first on Olson's 20th goal of the year at 9:27 from Henry, and finally on Richard's second of the night with 3:07 left from Brodie Serka and Kyle Wegner.  Surrey managed 13 shots at the North Shore net in the final frame for a game total of 65, while Allan McLucas in the Rebels net faced 15 for a game total of 38.

Surrey went 1 for 10 on the powerplay and was 14 for 14 on the penalty kill, picking up the two short-handed markers.

Rebels Sweep Rock (05 July 2009)

The Surrey Rebels swept the season series with the Semiahmoo Rock with a 6-2 win Sunday night at Cloverdale Arena in BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League play.  With the victory, the Rebels reinforced their hold on second place in the South Conference.

After falling behind 6 minutes into the contest, Surrey came back with a pair of goals to take the lead going into the first intermission.  Conor Campbell, at 11:17 from Max Richards, and Brodie Serka from Campbell at 12:16 got the tallies for the Rebels, who led 21-14 in shots after 20 minutes.

Richards made it 3-1 at 3:51 of the second period, assisted by Travis Schmidt, and Brad Olson gave Surrey a 3 goal bulge 38 seconds later, after a feed from Richards.  Derek Kolins closed out the period scoring with his 17th goal of the season from goalie Allan McLucas with 2:43 left.  Surrey held a 12-11 edge in shots in the middle frame.

Semiahmoo picked up a powerplay marker midway through the final frame to pull to within 4, but couldn't fabricate any more goals the rest of the way.  Kolins got his second of the night, from Serka, with 1:39 remaining to seal the deal for the now 10-6 Surrey squad.  The Rock outshot the Rebels 13-9 in the third, but trailed 42-38 on the night.  McLucas returned to the Surrey net after a 3 game break to stop 36 of 38 in a solid performance.  The Rebels went 0 for 1 on the powerplay and killed 6 of 7 short-handed situations.

Rebels Clip Hawks (03 July 2009)

After dropping a close decision the night before, the Surrey Rebels came out flying and hung on for an 11-10 victory over the North Delta Hawks Friday evening in BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League action at Cloverdale Arena.

Ryan Sepka opened the scoring 49 seconds in on a bullet of a shot, set up by Max Richards and Brad Olson.  Thomas Henry picked up his 6th goal of the season 65 seconds later from Kevin Vandenbossche and Gage Hayes, and Olson drove home his 17th of the year at 3:34 from Conor Campbell to make it 3-0 Surrey.  Andre Culjac took a Brandon Baldo pass and scored on a spectacular behind-the-back shot while killing a penalty with 5:41 left, then Sepka nailed his second of the game 2 minutes later from Vandenbossche to close out the first period scoring.  The Rebels outshot the Hawks 18-13.

After Olson scored his second of the night from Richards 3:49 into the middle stanza, North Delta responded with a powerplay goal at 6:01 and an even strength goal 68 seconds later to pull to within 2.  Vandenbossche made a nice check on the Hawks goalie while out of his crease, stole the ball and set up Sepka who made no mistake while completing his hat-trick at 9:03 to make the game 7-2.  However, the visitors were far from looking beaten at that point, rallying with 4 straight goals in the last 9 minutes to close the gap to 1 heading into the final 20 minutes.  Shots in the second favoured North Delta 21-15.

Campbell rocketed home his 5th of the season on the powerplay at 3:26 of the third period from Olson and Sepka to halt the Hawks run, but the neighbours to the west responded with a powerplay of their own less than a minute later.  Baldo made it 9-7 at 9:07 from Richards, only to have the Hawks again pull to within one at 11:05.  Chris Niemi got his first of the year from Kyle Wegner with 7:34 left and Campbell wired home his second of the night on the powerplay with 2:56 left to seemingly put the game away.  The Hawks put a bit of a scare into the hometown crowd with pair of shorthanded goals with 2:46 and 1:14 left, but goalie Clayton Finley closed the door the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Finley stopped 13 of 17 shots in the final frame, and 41 of 51 on the night.  His teammates managed 12 shots at the North Delta net in the third, for a game total of 45.  Surrey went 2 for 11 on the powerplay and 5 of 7 on the penalty kill.

New - Roadrunners Edge Rebels (02 July 2009)

The Surrey Rebels came close, but couldn't get the result the team desired, as the first place Richmond Roadrunners eked out an 8-7 win Thursday night at Minoru Arena.  The loss leaves Surrey in third place in the South Conference of the BC Intermediate B Lacrosse League, 6 points behind Richmond and 1 point behind Langley, who have played one more game.

The game was tied at 4 after 20 minutes, with Michael Bosch picking up a pair of goals and singles going to Andre Culjac and Zack Morin.  Richmond held a 17-16 edge in shots.

The home team finished the second period up 7-6, and outshot its guests 16-15 in the middle 20 minutes.  Culjac and Brad Olson scored for the Rebels.

After the Roadrunners went up 8-6 in the third, Surrey fought back but only managed a single goal from Brandon Baldo.  Shots in the final frame favoured Richmond 12-9, who ended up ahead 45-40 on the night.  Clayton Finley stopped 37 of the 45 shots he faced.  Assists in the game were credited to Morin, Denis Vezina (2), Max Richards, Conor Campbell, Thomas Henry and Travis Schmidt.  Surrey went 1 for 5 on the powerplay and 6 for 9 on the penalty kill.

Rebels Dispatch Delta (19 June 2009)

The Surrey Rebels rebounded from a less than stellar performance Monday night in Langley to dominate the Delta Islanders 7-2 in BC Intermediate B League action Friday night at Cloverdale Arena.  With the win, Surrey improves to 8-5 (won-lost) - two points behind Richmond in the race for first in the South Conference.

The Rebels led 4-0 after one, starting with Brad Olson picking up his 14th of the season at 3:36, assisted by Riley Brady-Springer.  Andre Culjac doubled the lead with 4:27 remaining, assisted by Ryan Sepka, and then Sepka on a fine individual effort with 2:52 left increased the lead to three.  Michael Bosch closed out the period with a powerplay marker, set up by Olson, with 37 seconds to go.  Shots heavily favoured Surrey 20-8.

The second period was a low scoring affair, with the only goals coming at 7:54 when Delta broke the shutout bid for Rebels starter Clayton Finley at 7:54 and Bosch picked up his second of the night from Olson 19 seconds later.  Surrey shelled the Delta net with 29 shots, while the visitors responded with 10 in the inning.

Derek Kolins opened the final 20 minutes with his team leading 16th goal of the season 1:13 in, with Chris Niemi picking up the assist, to make the score 6-1 and then Olson bagged his second of the evening on a great solo play at 6:44 to put the game virtually out of reach.  The Islanders did manage to squeeze one more past Finley with 8:24 left, but the Surrey netminder slammed the door shut the rest of the way to preserve the margin of victory.  The Rebels outshot Delta 18-11 in the third and finished the night with 67 shots.  Finley stopped 27 of 29 shots he faced for his third win of the season.  Surrey went 1 for 6 on the powerplay and killed off all 7 short-handed situations.

Warriors Upset Rebels (15 June 2009)

The Surrey Rebels had a rare power outage on offence and got blasted 9-1 by the Langley Warriors Monday night in BC Intermediate B League action at the George Preston Recreation Centre.

After Andre Culjac opened the scoring with his sixth of the season while killing a penalty at 1:46, assisted by Brad Olson, the hosts rattled off four unanswered goals to close out the period up 4-1.  Shots favoured Langley 15-11.   The Warriors added a pair in the second and blanked the Rebels, who came on and led that period in shots 21-9.   Things got ugly late in the final frame, first starting goalie Allan McLucas was tossed from the game with 4:33 left after an altercation with a Langley forward which left Surrey shorthanded the balance of the game.  The Warriors capitalized on that powerplay with three more goals to put the game firmly out of reach.  Another altercation took place with 14 seconds left involving John McBride and two Langley players, resulting in all getting thrown out.  The Warriors outshot the Rebels 14-10 in the third period, but it was the visitors who led the night in shots 40-37.  McLucas stopped 24 of 27, while Clayton Finley stopped 4 of 7 shots he faced in relief.  Surrey went 0 for 8 with the man advantage and killed 6 of 9 penalties.

Both McLucas and McBride await rulings from the Commissioners Office regarding suspensions, expected to be in the 1 to 3 game range.

Rebels Ground Hawks (04 June 2009)

The Surrey Rebels regained their winning ways in BC Intermediate B League action Thursday night at Sungod Arena by coming from behind, pushing the game into overtime, and then defeating the North Delta Hawks 13-12.  Ryan Sepka and Derek Kolins led the charge with each picking up four goals.  With the win, the Rebels moved back into sole possession of first place in the BCILL South Conference.

North Delta dominated the first 20 minutes, outscoring Surrey 5-3 and outshooting them 27-10.  The Rebels fought back in the second period to close the gap to 8-7, but shots continued to favour the Hawks 49-24 after 40 minutes.  The final frame was a wild one, featuring nine goals.  Kolins opened the scoring 2:03 in to tie the game, only to have the hosts come back with goals at 4:26 and 7:58 to make the game 10-8.  Michael Bosch, on a pair of unassisted markers at 9:27 and 9:51, tied things back up at 10, but North Delta again re-took the lead 36 seconds later.  Kolins, from Brad Olson, at 12:49 brought the Rebels back to a deadlock, then Sepka at 13:54 gave Surrey only its second lead of the night - the first coming at 2:55 of the first period when Brodie Serka opened the scoring.  The Rebels appeared to have their sixth win of the season in the bag until the Hawks connected on a powerplay goal with 14 seconds left to send the game into extra time.  However, overtime only lasted seven seconds as Kolins bagged his fourth of the evening, set up by Bosch and Olson to give the visitors a much needed two points.  North Delta held a 21-18 edge in shots in the third period and ended up outshooting Surrey 70-43 in the game.  Clayton Finley stopped 41 of 49 shots, while Allan McLucas blocked 17 of 21.  The Rebels went 1 for 5 on the powerplay and only killed off 1 of 8 short-handed situations, but did tally one goal while down a man.  Besides Sepka and Kolins with four goals each, other Surrey goal getters were Bosch (2), Serka, Olson and Spencer Gilbert.  Assists on the night went to Olson (2), Serka (2), Bosch (2), Sepka, Gilbert, Finley, Thomas Henry, Andre Culjac and Conor Campbell.

Rebels Fall To Adanacs (30 May 2009)

The Coquitlam Adanacs came to Cloverdale Arena Friday night and handed the Surrey Rebels their first home loss of the season 16-6 in BC Intermediate B League action.

Coquitlam held leads of 7-2 and 13-3 after 20 and 40 minutes respectively and had a distinct edge in offence the entire game, outshooting Surrey 67-38.  Goal scorers for the Rebels were Derek Kolins (3), Travis Schmidt (1st of season), Max Richards and David Goodwin, with assists going to Kyle Wegner, John McBride, Ryan Sepka, Michael Bosch, Brandon Baldo and Thomas Henry.  Starting goalie Allan McLucas stopped 36 of 49 shots he faced before giving way to Clayton Finley, who stopped 15 of 18, 13 minutes into the second period.  Surrey went 3 for 8 on the powerplay and killed all 10 penalties.

Rebels Split Weekend Games (23 May 2009)

The Surrey Rebels rebounded from an overtime defeat two nights earlier to drop the Semiahmoo Rock 14-10 BC Intermediate B League action Friday night at Cloverdale Arena, thus improving to 5-2 on the season.  Surrey opened the scoring 1:23 in when John McBride got his first of the season while on the powerplay, assisted by Conor Campbell and Brad Olson.  Semiahmoo tied it up just under two minutes later, but Derek Kolins restored the lead at 5:00 with his sixth of the year from Max Richards.  Semi replied with two goals just under two minutes apart and a third with 6:39 left to take a two goal lead, but Thomas Henry pulled the Rebels to within one nine seconds later on a feed from Kevin Vandenbossche.  The Rock got that one back 1:05 later, but the home team wasn't done as Kyle Wegner, while killing a penalty broke in and powered a shot past former Surrey goalie Brandon Ferguson with 6.3 seconds remaining to end the period down by one.  Olson and Denis Vezina assisted on the fourth goal.  Surrey led 23-14 in shots in the opening 20 minutes.

The Rock again made it a two goal game less than two minutes in when Spencer Hill took a pass from Ferguson and blew a shot through Rebels netminder Clayton Finley.  Andre Culjac picked up his fourth of the season at 6:13 from Olson, only to have Semiahmoo come back with Tyler McMillan's third goal on the night at 7:08.  The Rebels then went on a 3-0 run, starting with a pair from Olson at 8:44 and 9:33.  Richards assisted on the first, Brandon Baldo on the second.  Brodie Serka completed the run on a perfect shot on the powerplay to give Surrey the lead at 14:18, with Olson and Richards picking up helpers.  However, the Rock short-circuited the roll just under a minute after the Serka goal when Spencer Hill completed his hat-trick.  Not to be outdone, Olson notched his hat-trick with 2:07 left from Riley Brady Springer, and Richards capped off a great period with a beautiful goal with 18.3 seconds showing from Baldo and Ryan Sepka.  Surrey lead 27-10 in second period shots and held a 10-8 advantage going into the final 20 minutes.

Kolins opened the final frame with his second goal of the evening 16 seconds in, from Serka, and Alex Lamb nailed his first of the season on the powerplay from Richards at 4:40 to make the game 12-8.  Former Rebel Harrison Mortimer restored some hope for the Rock with a goal against the flow of play at 5:17, but the men in home white with orange and blue trim proved too much for the under-manned, tired neighbours from the south.  Kolins completed his hat-trick at 7:18 from Lamb and Sepka, on a one timer, from Kolins and Richards with five minutes left put the game out of reach.  Semi did pick up a goal in garbage time, but it was Surrey on top 14-10 at the final buzzer.  Shots in the third again favoured the Rebels 14-9, who finished the night with 64 shots.  Finley stopped 27 of 37 shots for his first win of the season.  Surrey went 3 for 5 with the man advantage and killed 5 of 7 penalties.

Saturday night, the team travelled to New Westminster and dropped a 15-4 decision to the Salmonbellies in what was described by coach Padraic Lawrence as the poorest outing for the Rebels in 2009.  The team will have to re-focus on the basics of offence and defence at practice this week before their next game against traditional powerhouse Coquitlam Adanacs Friday.

Rebels Fall to Saints (20 May 2009)

The Surrey Rebels dropped a 9-8 overtime decision to the host Port Coquitlam Saints Wednesday night in BC Intermediate B League action.

Port Coquitlam led 3-2 after 20 minutes, with both Surrey goals coming from Brodie Serka, with assists credited to Brad Olson (2) and Max Richards.  The Saints outshot the Rebels 23-14.

The teams traded goals early in the second period, with PoCo tallying 32 seconds in on the powerplay and Richards responding 1:28 later assisted by Olson.  The Saints widened the gap to three with goals at 3:46 and on the powerplay two minutes later.  David Goodwin notched his first of the season while killing a penalty at the midway point of the period, helped by Richards and Olson, to make it 6-4, but the Saints came back with three unanswered goals to chase Rebels' starter Clayton Finley from the net after 32 shots and 8 goals against with 3:38 remaining.  Surrey held down the fort for the balance of the period and finished 40 minutes of play down 8-4.

The visitors dominated the third period, scoring four unanswered markers, two while with the man advantage, to end regulation time tied 8-8.  Serka, completing his hat-trick, Conor Campbell, Denis Vezina with his first of the season, and Michael Bosch got the Surrey goals while Bosch, Richards and Ryan Sepka got the assists.  The Rebels outshot the Saints 15-10 in the third.

The team exchanged quality chances in the first half of the overtime, but it was Port Coquitlam who ended things at the 2:39 mark on a screened shot beating Surrey reliever Allan McLucas.  Shots on the night ended up favouring the Rebels 56-48, with McLucas stopping 13 of the 14 shots he faced.

Rebels Blank Warriors (08 May 2009)

The Surrey Rebels won its third straight Friday night at Cloverdale Arena when they hammered the Langley Warriors 12-0 in BC Intermediate B League action.  Allan McLucas had a solid outing en route to joining Jeff Geyer as the only goalies in Rebels history to record a shutout in league play.

The opening nine minutes were somewhat uneventful as both teams generated few scoring chances.  However while playing 4 on 3, Brodie Serka took a feed off of Brad Olson and snapped a shot past Warriors netminder Mike Coppin at 9:14 to put the Rebels out front.  Michael Bosch picked up his team-leading 10th goal of the season on an ensuing powerplay at 11:57 from Kyle Wegner to double the lead and Derek Kolins closed out the period with his third of the season at 18:33.  Shots favoured Surrey 14-9.

The Rebels took complete charge in the middle stanza, outscoring the visitors 5-0.  Conor Campbell started the run 6:44 in on a setup from David Goodwin.  Max Richards made it a five goal advantage 37 seconds later from Olson and Andre Culjac.  Brandon Baldo found the mesh at 12:50 from Alex Lamb, and then Culjac got his third of the season from Goodwin and Olson with 4:46 remaining.  Bosch notched his second of the night with 1:53 left from Lamb to complete the run.  Surrey again outshot Langley 16-10.

Surrey continued its domination in the final frame, starting with Serka's second of the evening 1:29 in from Culjac and Corey Baldwin.  Campbell from Goodwin at 3:18 made the score 10-0 and Baldo from Richards and Olson 47 seconds later increased the margin to 11.  With the game in the bag, Kolins potted an "insurance" marker with 4:49 left, assisted by Serka, to end an impressive night by the home squad.  The Rebels fired 20 shots on goal in the third to finish the game with 50.  McLucas turned away 7 shots in the last inning and all 26 on the night.  The game featured four fights, all won by Surrey, who managed to kill off all nine man disadvantages and connected on two of 15 powerplay opportunities.

Rebels Beach Islanders (03 May 2009)

The Surrey Rebels continued its domination of South Conference teams Sunday when they took a
10-9 decision over the Delta Islanders in Ladner Sunday night.  For the first time this season, Surrey opened the scoring at 4:35 when Andre Culjac picked up his second of the season unassisted, but Delta responded just over five minutes later on the powerplay.  Max Richards restored the lead from Brad Olson with 6:56 to go, but again the home team tied it up while on the man advantage less than two minutes later.  Derek Kolins, making his regular season debut, took and Olson setup and rippled the twine with 11 seconds left to close out the period scoring.  Shots in the first favoured the Islanders 19-12.

The Rebels opened up a two goal margin 5:20 into the second period when Olson notched his sixth of the season from Ryan Sepka while short-handed.  After Delta made it 4-3 two minutes later, Surrey went on a 3-0 run starting with Kolins getting his second on the night, unassisted, at 9:34.  Corey Baldwin with his first of the season at 10:12 on the powerplay and Brandon Baldo from Spencer Gilbert at 13:21 gave the visitors a four goal bulge.  However, Delta went on a five goal blitz in the final 5:42 to take their first lead of the night 8-7 into the locker room.  The Islanders again held an advantage in period shots 18-13.

After Delta made it 9-7 four minutes into the final stanza, Surrey woke up and went on an attack that resulted in three unanswered goals:  Thomas Henry from Olson at 7:36, Olson with his second goal and fifth point of the night from Conor Campbell at 11:23 to tie things up, and Riley Brady-Springer scoring his first of the season and what proved to be the game winner with 3:11 left.  The Rebels then shut the door to preserve its third win and second in three nights.

Surrey edged Delta 10-8 in third period shots, but it was the Islanders who finished the night holding a 45-35 margin.  Allan McLucas stopped 36 of the 45 shots he faced to earn his third win of the young season.  The Rebels went 1 for 6 on the powerplay and killed 5 of 7 penalties.

Rebels Crush Rock (01 May 2009)

The Surrey Rebels improved to 2-1 on the season after a 10-2 pasting of the Semiahmoo Rock in BC Intermediate Lacrosse League action at Cloverdale Arena Friday night.

After once again giving up the game's first goal 42 seconds into the contest when former Rebel Sonam Tsering scored, assisted by Dan Rose, Surrey responded with four unanswered goals in the period.  Michael Bosch potted his team leading seventh of the season at 5:54 to tie the game, Kyle Wegner got his third of the season at 15:37 from Andre Culjac, Ryan Sepka netted his fourth of the season from Bosch and Brad Olson while killing a penalty with 41 seconds left, and Wegner unassisted 27 seconds later finished off the period.  The Rebels clearly dominated the opening 20 minutes, firing 26 shots at Rock starter Dennis Farshi, while Allan McLucas faced 8 shots in the Surrey net.

Surrey continued its goal run in the second period, starting with Bosch's second of the night from Captain Max Richards 30 seconds in.  Sepka notched his second of the game at 6:19 from Conor Campbell before Semiahmoo broke the trend at 9:39 on a powerplay goal from another former Rebel Harrison Mortimer.  Olson responded with his fifth goal of the season, from Campbell and Wegner, with 4:45 left to make the score 7-2 heading into the second intermission.  Surrey held an 21-14 edge in shots in the middle frame.

Surrey went 0-3 on the powerplay, but managed to kill 9 of 10 short-handed situations.  The Rebels bombed the Semiahmoo net with 80 shots, compared to 28 for the visitors.  McLucas turned aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced for his second win.

Rebels Comeback Cut Short (27 April 2009)

The Surrey Rebels' record dropped to 1-1 after the team lost a heartbreaker to the Ridge Meadows Burrards 14-13 in BCILL "B" League action at Planet Ice Maple Ridge Monday night.  The loss spoiled a brilliant six goal performance by Michael Bosch, playing in his first game of the season for the men in orange.  The Burrards dominated the first period, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before the game was 6 minutes old, with two of the goals coming on the powerplay.  Bosch notched his first of the night at 6:56 from Brandon Baldo, but Rebels continued to run into penalty trouble and home team responded with two more powerplay goals at 10:07 and 12:41.  Andre Culjac cut the lead back to three off a feed from Kevin Vandenbossche with 4:06 left, but Ridge Meadows rattled off three more goals in the final 3:49, the second on a powerplay, to take an 8-2 lead into the dressing room.  Shots favoured the Burrards 21-11, who went 5 for 8 with the man advantage.

The barrage continued as the home team opened the second period on the powerplay and scored 34 seconds in and followed that up with another goal a minute and a half later.  Surrey responded at 4:06 as Spencer Gilbert picked up his second of the season, assisted by Thomas Henry and Denis Vezina, but not long after were again penalized and paid the price as Ridge Meadows netted its seventh powerplay goal on the night at 7:22.  The Burrards made the score 12-3 less than a minute later, but Bosch on a fine individual effort off the face-off scored to bring the visitors to within eight.  This was short-lived, as 30 seconds later Ridge responded, which led to a goaltending change for the Rebels to shake the team up.  The move definitely paid off, as Surrey went on a 5-0 run in a span of 2 1/2 minutes, starting at the 12:05 mark when Bosch potted a short-handed tally unassisted.  He followed up with a even strength goal from Gilbert and Vandenbossche 32 seconds later and then a powerplay marker at 14:00.  Max Richards picked up another powerplay goal 21 seconds later, assisted by Culjac and Brad Olson, and off the ensuing face-off Bosch scored his 6th of the evening, assisted by Culjac and Ryan Sepka to close out the period.  The Rebels again trailed in shots 25-15 in the middle stanza, with Clayton Finley facing all 25 shots before being replaced by Allan McLucas.

Surrey kept its unanswered run of goals going into the final frame starting at 1:57 when Kyle Wegner took a Conor Campbell pass and beat the Burrards keeper, which was followed by a Sepka goal from Olson and Culjac at 7:50.  Ridge finally managed to solve McLucas with 6:05 left to make the score 14-11, but the Rebels replied with an Olson goal 40 seconds later, assisted by Gilbert.  Surrey battled hard for the final few minutes and did manage one goal with eight seconds left (Wegner from Olson), but it was simply too little, too late.  Shots in the third period favoured the Burrards 19-13 and on the night, the Rebels were out-shot 65-39.

Rebels Take Home Opener (24 April 2009)

The Surrey Rebels opened the BCILL "B" League season with a 9-6 victory over the Port Moody Thunder Friday night at Cloverdale Arena.  After a slow start and falling behind 4:16 into the contest, Surrey finally found the net and went on a 4-0 run starting with a pair of goals from Max Richards - the first at 8:23 and the second on the powerplay at 10:07 assisted by Spencer Gilbert.  Gilbert then notched on of his own with 5:29 left assisted by Chris Niemi, and Ryan Sepka completed the run 1:50 later on a fine individual effort.  Port Moody closed out the period scoring with 1:13 left but were clearly outplayed as the Rebels led in goals 4-2 and shots 18-10.

The visitors cut the margin to one 1:21 into the middle frame, but Surrey did not show any signs of panic.  The teams traded goals just over a minute apart starting with Brad Olson rippling the twine at 4:37.  After the Thunder made it 5-4, the Rebels dominated the rest of the period, resulting in a pair of goals.  Sepka picked up his second of the night from Olson at 7:25 and Brandon Baldo took a Gilbert pass and quick-sticked the ball into a gaping net with 8:52 left to increase the margin to three after 40 minutes.

The Rebels ran into a bit of penalty trouble in the final stanza, but instead of it being a disadvantage, it worked out to be a benefit to Surrey who were able to kill time off the clock and pick up a couple of Brad Olson short-handed tallies to boot.  After the Thunder made the score 7-5 at the 4:05 mark, Olson took a pass from David Goodwin and single-handedly undressed the entire Port Moody power-play unit before beating a stunned netminder at 6:27.  Olson then did it again just under four minutes later after picking up a loose ball while killing a penalty to make the score 9-5.  However, Port Moody weren't done yet.  The men in black piled on the shots in the last eight minutes, but only managed one goal with 5:45 left.  The top player for the Rebels on the night was Olson, who finished the game with a hat trick and one helper.  Final shots favoured Surrey 37-34, with Allan McLucas making 28 stops.

Rebels Sweep Pre-Season Matches (17 April 2009)

The Surrey Rebels went 2-0 in BCILL pre-season action after defeating the North Delta Hawks at Sungod Arena Thursday night 10-5 and then overcoming a 4-1 deficit to overtake the Langley Warriors 9-7 at Cloverdale Arena Friday night in front of over 200 spectators.

In North Delta Thursday, Surrey jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 20 minutes on goals by Derek Kolins and Conor Campbell (2 each), Max Richards and Michael Bosch.  The Hawks scored the only goal in the second period, then went on a 3-0 run to cut the margin to one.  After a Rebels time-out, the team rallied with a 4-0 run to put the game out of reach.  Bosch notched his second and third of the evening, while Brandon Baldo picked up a pair.  Shots favoured North Delta on the night 45-41, with Clayton Finley turning aside 40 of 45.  Brad Olson lead the Rebels in assists with four, with Richards and John McBride collecting two each and singles going to Campbell, Travis Schmidt, Denis Vezina, Andre Culjac and David Goodwin.

Friday night in Cloverdale, Langley jumped out to a 1-0 lead 22 seconds in to the contest and extended the advantage to three goals less than halfway through the opening period before Michael Bosch found the twine just over a minute later to make the score 3-1.  After the Warriors restored their margin five minutes in to the middle stanza, Surrey went on a three goal run with powerplay markers by Conor Campbell and Bosch and a short-handed goal by Andre Culjac to tie the game at four after 40 minutes.  After the Rebels took their first lead of the game two minutes into the final frame on a goal by Derek Kolins, Langley quickly tied the game just over a minute later.  At 7:44, the visitors made it 6-5, but half a minute later Brandon Baldo tied things up again with his third goal in two nights.  The see-saw third period saw Surrey again take the lead at 10:15 with Culjac picking up his second on the evening before the Warriors knotted things at seven 20 seconds later.  The Rebels took the lead for good at 12:05 when Ryan Sepka converted on a perfect one-timer, with Bosch collecting his second straight hat trick with just under six minutes left to seal the deal.  Surrey assists on the night went to captain Max Richards (2), Culjac, Zack Morin and Thomas Henry.  Allan McLucas went all the way in goal, stopping 31 of 38 shots.  The Rebels ended up outshooting Langley 49-38.
