A perfect preseason has the Surrey Rebels looking forward to their first game of the B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League schedule.

The Rebels stopped the North Delta Hawks 10-5 last Thursday (April 16) at the Sungod Arena, then erased a three-goal deficit before topping the Langley Warriors 9-7 Friday at the Cloverdale Arena.

Surrey exploded for six goals in the first period, more than enough offence to defeat the Hawks in North Delta.

Derek Kolins and Conor Campbell tallied two each, with Max Richards and Michael Bosch adding singles.

North Delta trailed 6-1 after 20 minutes, but scored the only goal of the second period, and notched the first two of the third to pull to within a goal. But Bosch added his second and third goals of the game, and Brandon Baldo netted a pair to close out the scoring.

Rebels netminder Clayton Finley turned aside 40 of 45 shots, while Brad Olson contributed offensively with four assists.

Friday night in Cloverdale, Langley needed just 22 seconds to score the game’s first goal, and were up 4-1 five minutes into the second period before the Rebels began to find the net.

Bosch with his second of the game, Campbell, and Andre Culjac with a shorthanded effort pulled Surrey into a 4-4 tie after two periods.

Kolins put the Rebels ahead for the first time in the game early in the third period, and after Langley regained the lead, Baldo and Culjac tallied to put Surrey back on top 7-6.

The Warriors again pulled even midway through the third period, but Ryan Sepka scored the winner, then Bosch completed his hat trick with an insurance goal with six minutes to play.

Allan McLucas stopped 38 shots in the Rebels goal, while his teammate fired 49 shots at the Langley net.

Surrey plays its first game of the regular season tonight (Friday) against the Port Moody Thunder at 8 p.m. in the Cloverdale Arena.

- Getting goals from six players, the Surrey Rebels topped the New Westminster Salmonbellies 7-5 in a West Coast Junior Lacrosse League preseason game Monday night at the Cloverdale Arena.

The game was the first for new head coach Ed Collins, who will have 10 returning players back from a team which struggle through a 1-14-1 (won-lost-tied) season a year ago, and 15 new faces in the lineup.

The Salmonbellies netted the game’s first goal just 56 seconds into the contest, but tallies from Andrew Kennedy and Stu Redmond had the home side up 2-1 after the first period.

Goals from Travis Mundy, Trent Wittal, Tyler Voisey and Steve Purvis in the second period increased the lead to 6-2 late in the second period.

Mundy’s second of the game in the third period helped slow a Salmonbellies rally, giving the Rebels the win.

New Westminster outshot the Rebels 49-40, but Surrey netminder Jeff Geyer turned aside 44 shots to help lift the home team to the victory.

Kennedy, Tom Tran, Bobby Tammen and Sean O’Beirn each finished the night with two assists.

Surrey opens their regular season next Monday at 8 p.m. in Cloverdale against the Delta Islanders.
