Rebels start with a win
The Surrey Rebels struck for four goals in a 10-minute span in the first period and went on to a 9-6 victory over the Port Moody Thunder in the opening game of the West Coast Intermediate Lacrosse League season Friday night at the Cloverdale Arena.
After giving up the game’s first goal, the Rebels responded with a pair of scores from Max Richards, and one each from Spencer Gilbert and Ryan Sepka for a 4-2 advantage after 20 minutes.
Port Moody twice pulled to within a goal in the second period, but Surrey was up by three goals after 40 minutes. Brad Olson scored once, then assisted on Sepka’s second of the game. Brandon Baldo made it 7-4 going into the final frame, which saw Olson net a pair of shorthanded goals to close out the Surrey scoring.
The Rebels outshot Port Moody 37-43, with Allan McLucas turning aside 28 shots in the Surrey goal.
After playing on the road Monday night against the Ridge Meadows Burrards, the Rebels will be at home again next Friday when the Semiahmoo Rock visit the Cloverdale Arena at 8 p.m.
