Playing three times in five nights, the Surrey Rebels managed just one win in B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League play last week.

The Rebels fell 9-8 in overtime to the Port Coquitlam Saints Wednesday night, then rebounded to top the Semiahmoo Rock 14-10 Friday at the Cloverdale Arena. Back in action Saturday night, Surrey dropped a 15-4 decision to the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

Trailing 8-4 after 40 minutes, the Rebels scored four unanswered goals in the third period to force overtime, only to give up the sudden-death winner two minutes into extra time.

Brodie Serka paced the Rebels with three goals, with Max Richards adding two, and David Goodwin, Conor Campbell and Dennis Vezina notching one each. Richards also collected a pair of assists to finish the night with four points.

Surrey was outshot 23-14 in the opening period, but held a 43-25 shots on goal advantage the rest of the game.

In an all-Surrey battle Friday night in Cloverdale, the Rebels trailed Semiahmoo 5-4 after 20 minutes, but surged into a 10-8 lead after the second period and cruised to their fifth win in seven league games.

Brad Olson was in on seven of the 14 goals, scoring three times and setting up four others. Derek Kolins also had the hat trick, with Richards scoring once and collecting four helpers. Other goal scorers for the home team were John McBride, Thomas Henry, Kyle Wegner, Andre Culjac, Serka, Ryan Sepka and Alex Lamb.

The Rebels had a huge edge in play over the first-year Rock, outshooting the visitors 64-37. Clayton Finley made 27 saves in the Surrey goal, getting his first victory of the season. Surrey was three-for-five on the powerplay, and killed off five of seven shorthanded situations.

Twenty-four hours later, the Rebels were in New Westminster where they played what coach Padraic Lawrence called “the poorest outing of the season.”

Surrey, with a 5-3 won-lost record, leads the South Conference of the 13-team league, but will have a difficult test Friday when the 4-0 Coquitlam Adanacs visit the Cloverdale Arena for an 8 p.m. game.

- The North Delta Hawks occupy third place in the South Conference at 3-2-1 (won-lost-tied).

The Hawks edged Langley 5-4 Thursday night at the Sungod Arena, and will host the 4-1 Richmond Roadrunners Thursday at 8 p.m.
