Rebels drop two to rivals from the North
Playing against a pair of opponents challenging for the North Conference lead, the Surrey Rebels dropped a pair of B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League games last week.
The Rebels fell 9-6 to the first place North Shore Indians last Wednesday night in North Vancouver, then were at home Friday night at the Cloverdale Arena where they lost a 7-4 decision to the second place New Westminster Salmonbellies.
The losses dropped Surrey’s record to 3-6-1, but the Rebels remained in fourth place in the South Conference standings.
North Shore scored just 22 seconds into last Wednesday’s game and led 4-2 after the first period, and were up 7-4 after 40 minutes. They built the lead to 9-4 before Surrey netted a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes to play.
Ryan Millen and James Main each tallied twice for the visitors, with Garrett Ewasiuk and Brandon Baldo adding singles.
John McBride, Steven Munro, Kale Millard, David Goodwin and goaltender Joey Puchmayr collected one assist each.
The Rebels were outshot 47-45, with Puchmayr making 38 saves in the Surrey goal.
Friday’s game conflicted with several high school graduation activities, and left the Rebels with just 11 runners available for their game against the Salmonbellies.
New Westminster dominated play over the first 40 minutes, outshooting their hosts 42-17, but had a narrow one-goal lead midway through the game until a pair of goals late in the second period left the Salmonbellies with a 5-2 advantage.
The Rebels used the rulebook to try to get back into the game, calling for a measurement of New Westminster goaltending equipment. Both the starter and backup were ejected for using illegal equipment, forcing the Salmonbellies to put a runner in goal for the final six minutes of play.
Surrey did score two late goals, but it only matched a pair of third period scores by the visitors.
Vaughn Readman was the top offensive performer for the Rebels, scoring three times and assisting on a goal from Rily Brady-Springer.
Surrey is on the road again tonight (Wednesday) to play the 1-5-1 (won-lost-tied) Port Moody Thunder, then are home to face the 3-4 Burnaby Lakers Friday at 8 p.m. at the Cloverdale Arena.
- The North Delta Hawks edged the Langley Warriors 2-1 last Thursday evening at the Sungod Arena, a win which improved North Delta’s record to 5-2.
The Hawks are in second place in the South Conference, behind only the 6-3 Delta Islanders. North Delta will host Port Moody next Thursday at 8 p.m. at Sungod.
- Goaltenders for the two local Intermediate B teams are among the top three in save percentage.
Brenden Brady of North Delta leads the league with a .910 save percentage, while Surrey’s Puchmayr is third at .885. Delta’s Brett McNamee is second at .893.
