Rebels fall in season opener
The Surrey Rebels managed just one goal over the final 40 minutes of play, and lost 6-4 to the Delta Islanders in the first game of the B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League season last Friday in the Cloverdale Arena.
After the Islanders opened the scoring, Surrey netted three goals in 90 seconds for a 3-1 lead. Thomas Henry, Brandon Sigmund and Vaughn Readman were the goal scorers for the Rebels.
Delta got one goal back in the last minute of the first period, and tied the game 3-3 with the only goal of the second. Surrey went up 4-3 two minutes into the final period on a goal by Garrett Ewasiuk, only to give up three goals in the last 10 minutes of play.
Clayton Finley had a great game in goal for the Rebels, stopping 52 of 58 shots he faced. Surrey was a perfect five-for-five while shorthanded, but was scoreless on four powerplay opportunities.
The Rebels are at home again next Friday, when the Richmond Roadrunners are the visitors for an 8 p.m. game.
