Team History
The Surrey Rebels Junior B Lacrosse Club joined the
West Coast Junior Lacrosse League
in 2006. The first season saw Rebels with only
a handful of players that played an outstanding
season but because of the low numbers the team
finished in the lower end of the stats. The
second season saw a marked improvement with the team
finishing in the middle of the division standings.
By the fourth season, the Surrey Rebels became a top
contender in the WCJLL, finishing in fourth place.
Since the beginning, Rebels' team management and
coaching staff have worked closely with Surrey
Lacrosse Association to ensure that Minor players
are able to continue to play the great game of
Lacrosse in our community on into their adult years.
We strive to have highly competitive teams at both
our Intermediate and Junior levels to give our young
Rebels teams to cheer for and to want to play for
one day.
Team Administration
The Junior B Rebels are members of the
British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA) and, along with the
Intermediate B Rebels, are part of
the Senior
Division of the Surrey Lacrosse Association or
SLA (formerly Surrey Minor Lacrosse Association,
SMLA). The Senior Division is a
completely separate entity
and works as an independent unit from the Minor
Divisions, and is not in any way
financially subsidized by the
Surrey
Lacrosse Association. The Junior Rebels have established a great working
relationship with the SLA, Intermediate Rebels and
Midget
teams with regard to players available for
game call-ups. Surrey Rebels Junior B Lacrosse is governed
and managed by a group of dedicated
volunteers with
many years of experience in the game of Lacrosse.
League Affiliation
Junior Rebels players are
registered members of the BCLA and the team is a member of the
West Coast Junior Lacrosse League (WCJLL).
As such, the team is bound
by the mandate of the WCJLL constitution and will
adhere to the guidelines as they pertain to the team
and its
members.
The WCJLL is a growing league with current teams
in Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, New
Westminster, North Shore, Port Coquitlam, Port
Moody, Richmond, Ridge
Meadows and Surrey.
Playing Season
The Junior B lacrosse season runs from April 27 to mid-July
with the top 8 teams advancing to best-of 3
playoff rounds and then Provincials
during the BC Day long weekend in August. The regular season will consist of
20 games. During the regular season, the
Junior Rebels will
normally have 3 sessions per week – one home
game, one practice, and one away
game.
Home games are Monday nights with an 8:00pm
start at the Cloverdale Arena. Away games are
on a variety of nights with most games
starting at
8:00pm. Check our
Schedule Page regularly for updates.
Pre-Season
Pre-season
training sessions usually begin in mid-February depending on
venue availability. As we play indoors in arenas, we
must wait for the ice
to be removed before we have
access to the facility. We have the option of outdoor
sessions at a local lacrosse box until we access to the
arena. Training sessions are generally 60 to 90 minutes
in length and run 1 to 2 days per week. Unless
notified, players are expected to be
in full gear for
all sessions. Players are expected to notify the coach
if they are unable to attend any scheduled session.
Team Selection
The
WCJLL mandates that Junior teams carry up to 25
players on their roster. Team membership is
not automatic and interested players
must attend
pre-season training sessions in order to be
considered for the team. Team selection process
starts in February/March,
continues until the
beginning of the playing season, and is open to all
residents of Surrey. Pre-season training
information for the current
year of play will
usually be posted on the team website in January.
All participating players will be evaluated on their
performance during the
pre-season. There will
be a selection panel to observe and evaluate the
player’s performance over the duration of the
pre-season, with final
team selections being made at
the beginning of the playing season.
Note:
Players may be added or released from the roster up to
mid-June of the regular playing season.
Once a
player is selected to the team, if the player is 19
years of age or older, the player will then sign the
BCLA player registration card and
become a registered
player with the Junior Rebels, at
which time the player will be expected to pay a
registration fee. If the player is under
the age of 19
years, a parent or Guardian must complete the form and
again payment of the full registration fee must be
submitted at that
time.
Player Registration
Once a player is signed to the Junior Rebels, the player is expected to pay the
registration fee in full, becomes the property of
the Surrey
Rebels organization, and is no longer
eligible to play for any other team unless formally
released by the team management.
Registration fee for the season is expected to be $350 and is due and payable in full before the signed
player will be permitted to
play in any league games.
These fees are
up 16% from last season due to the loss of Direct
Access Gaming funds from the Province, which made up
33% of our annual operating budget. Players are encouraged to bring in sponsors for the
team to offset their registration fee. Information on
team
sponsorship is available on our
Sponsors Page. If a signed player has financial
concerns regarding the registration fee, please contact
the
Team Manager to discuss the situation, which will be
kept in the strictest confidence. Team management does
not want financial issues to
deter a player from
attending pre-season training sessions or from signing
with the Rebels.
