Rebels win a pair
Another two victories have extended their season-opening win streak to six games.
The Surrey Rebels, the lone unbeaten team in the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League, edged the Delta Islanders 5-4 Monday night in Ladner, five days after an 8-6 victory over the Ridge Meadows Burrards.
Goaltender Jeff Geyer turned in a solid performance in Ladner, stopping 59 shots to steal the victory.
After a scoreless first period, in which Delta held a 20-11 shots on goal advantage, the Islanders opened the scoring in the opening minute of the second frame. Curt Callard tied the score in the period’s second minute, then set up Chris Martin for a go-ahead goal before netting his second of the game for a 3-1 Surrey lead.
Delta pulled to within a goal twice, but each time Callard responded. He completed his hat trick early in the third period, then made it 5-3 by netting the eventual winner with seven minutes to play. The Islanders scored on the powerplay with 34 seconds to go, but the Rebels hung on for the win.
Surrey jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period in Maple Ridge on their way to a victory over the Burrards. Martin with two goals, Callard, Tommy Tran and Sean O’Beirn tallied for the Rebels. Martin tallied his third of the game in the second period, and Callard scored two more over the final 40 minutes to complete his hat trick. Callard also assisted on four goals for a seven-point night.
Surrey will host the Coquitlam Adanacs in their next game, Monday night at 8 p.m. in the Cloverdale Arena.
