Lakers rally upends Rebels
Penalties and a last-minute turnover cost the Surrey Rebels Saturday night in Burnaby.
The West Coast Junior Lacrosse League team squandered a 4-1 third period lead, and lost 5-4 to the Burnaby Lakers at the Copeland Arena, falling to .500 (2-2-1, won-lost-tied) on the season.
Surrey gave up the first goal just 73 seconds into the game, but dominated for the next 30 minutes. Brad Olson tied the contest late in the opening frame with Max Richards getting an assist. Richards then netted his first two goals of the season in the second period, giving the Rebels a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Cody Hydes made it 4-1 less than two minutes into the third, with an assist from Tyler Voisy.
But then the wheels fell off.
The Rebels were assessed three consecutive penalties, and the Lakers scored on all three powerplay opportunities, the last coming with 3:38 to tie the game.
Surrey then turned the ball over, and Burnaby took advantage to score the winning goal on a two-on-none break.
Burnaby outshot the Rebels 60-46.
- The Surrey Rebels Intermediate B team also lost a 4-1 lead, and had to settle for a 4-4 tie against the Port Coquitlam Saints Gold.
David Goodwin and Brandon Baldo lifted the Rebels to a 2-0 lead after the first period, then after Port Coquitlam notched their first goal of the game early in the second frame, Thomas Henry and Goodwin tallied on the powerplay for a three-goal Surrey lead.
The Saints Gold began cutting into the lead, scoring with one second remaining in the period, then pulled to within one less than two minutes into the third period. Outshooting their hosts 23-5 in the final frame, Port Coquitlam tied it with nine minutes remaining.
Joey Puchmayr stopped 53 of 58 shots in Surrey’s goal, while his teammates directed 40 shots at the Saints Gold net.
Now at 1-3-1 on the season, the Rebels continue their B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League schedule with road games Thursday against the 4-3 Richmond Roadrunners, and Sunday in Coquitlam against the 3-2 Adanacs.
