Opposition fills the net in Rebels losses

Giving up 30 goals in a little more than 24 hours, the Surrey Rebels dropped a pair of West Coast Junior B Lacrosse League games early this week.

The Rebels fell just short Sunday night in Coquitlam, dropping a 15-13 decision to the Adanacs. Monday night at home in the Cloverdale Arena, they were handed a 15-7 setback by the Port Coquitlam Saints.

Surrey was down 6-0 early in the second period Monday night before they managed to net their first goal of the game, a powerplay goal from Tyler Voisey two minutes into the frame.

Zack Peach and Max Richards each tallied two goals and an assist, with Matt Clarke, Trent Wittall and Sean O’Beirn also scoring. Brad Olson with three assists and Voisey with a pair of helpers also had three-point games.

Port Coquitlam had period leads of 5-0 and 13-5, and outshot the Rebels 64-46. Surrey was an impressive four-for-nine on the powerplay, but the Saints responded with three powerplay goals on eight opportunities.

Sunday nights contest saw four lead changes, and the Rebels erase a four-goal deficit late in the second period to knot the score 10-10 after 40 minutes.

Coquitlam opened the third period with a pair of breakaway goals, taking a lead they wouldn’t give up. Three times Surrey pulled to within one, and three times the Adanacs responded with a goal.

Richards with three goals and a pair of assists led the Rebels scoring, with Olson also having a five-point night on a goal and four helpers. Trent Wittall, Scott O’Coin and Conor Campbell netted two each. Brad Prance, Voisey and Peach completed the scoring.

The Rebels saw their record (won-lost-tied) fall to 5-7-1 and are in seventh place in 11-team league. Eight teams will qualify for the playoffs.

The Rebels next game is on Monday at 8 p.m. in the Cloverdale Arena against the 7-3 Burnaby Lakers.
