Rebels can't keep pace with Islanders
Unable to match the speed of their hosts, the Surrey Rebels fell 9-4 to the Delta Islanders in a West Coast Junior B Lacrosse League game Sunday in Ladner.
The Islanders outran Surrey all night, creating turnovers, converting breakaways and firing 72 shots at Rebels goaltender Jeff Geyer.
Delta needed just 22 seconds to open the scoring, and led 3-1 and 7-2 at the period breaks. Brad Olson and Max Richards each scored once and assisted on another to lead the Rebels scoring. Bobby Tammen had the third tally, with Intermediate call-up Timmy Tammen, goalie Jeff Geyer and Tyler Voisey earning assists.
Despite the loss, Geyer had a solid outing in goal, making 63 saves, including 13 stops on Islanders breakaways.
The Rebels fell to 3-4-1 (won-lost-tied) on the season, and are in fifth place in the 11-team league.
They play on the road again next Sunday, visiting the 6-0 Port Coquitlam Saints. Their next home game is one night later, when the 6-2 Islanders visit the Cloverdale Arena for a game Monday night at 8 p.m.
- In the middle of a four-game stretch away from home, the Surrey Rebels split a pair of B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League (BCILL) games last week.
Surrey raced out to a 6-0 lead by the midway point of the second period, and went on to a 7-4 win over the Richmond Roadrunners last Thursday (May 20). Brandon Baldo with two goals and an assist was the top Rebels scorer. Mike Meldrum, Kyle Clarke, Garrett Ewasiuk, James Main and Timmy Tammen also scored for the winners.
Kevin Vandenbossche assisted on two goals, with Thomas Henry, John McBride, Alex Lamb, David Goodwin and goalie Joey Puchmayr earning one helper each.
Puchmayr stopped 45 of 49 Richmond shots, while the Rebels took 48 shots at the Roadrunners goal.
Surrey struggled Sunday night in Coquitlam, and was handed a 12-2 loss by the Adanacs. Coquitlam led 1-0 and 5-2 at the period breaks before breaking the game open with seven unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes. The Adanacs outshot the Rebels 58-24.
Denis Vezina and Ryan Millen were Surrey’s goal scorers, with goalie Clayton Finley and Brandon Sigmund collecting one assist each.
Surrey is now 3-4-1 (won-lost-tied), and in fourth place in the South Conference of the BCILL, but just a point back of three teams tied for top spot.
The Rebels are at home tonight (Friday) to face the 5-1 New Westminster Salmonbellies, who are in second place in the North Conference.
