Rebels lose for first time
Too many mistakes led to the first loss of the season for the Surrey Rebels.
The Junior B team fell 11-6 to the Port Moody Thunder Thursday night at the Port Moody Sports Centre, their first defeat in three West Coast Junior Lacrosse League games.
Penalties and turnovers contributed to the Thunder scoring on breakaways and close-in scoring chances. Port Moody led 4-3 and 8-4 at the period breaks, and outshot the Rebels 60-48.
Surrey stayed close until midway through the second period. After falling behind 3-1 early in the contest, they rallied to tie the score late in the opening frame, only to give the ball away and allowing a Thunder go-ahead goal with just two seconds to play.
The Thunder made Surrey pay while in the penalty box, scoring on three consecutive powerplay goals midway through the second period, and build an 8-4 lead.
Mike Kennedy tallied three times for the Rebels, with Brad Olson netting a pair and Sean O’Beirn scoring once. Kennedy also assisted on a pair of goals to finish with five points. Olson, O’Beirn, Braden Wilkins and netminder Jeff Geyer collected one assist each.
Surrey was three-for-12 with the man advantage, but killed off just two of seven short-handed situations.
The Rebels are in Burnaby Saturday night for a contest with the Lakers. Next home game is Monday at 8 p.m. in Cloverdale against the Coquitlam Adanacs.
