Losing streak ends with win over Warriors
After two consecutive losses, the Surrey Rebels completed a season sweep of the winless Langley Warriors Friday night with a 15-6 victory at the George Preston Recreation Centre.
The Rebels, 11-3 winners over Langley on May 2, blew Friday’s game open with five goals in a little more than two minutes late in the second period. Trailing 3-2 after one period, the Warriors erased a two-goal deficit to tie the contest 4-4 early in the second. Surrey pulled ahead 6-5 before the five-goal outburst to lead 11-6 after 40 minutes.
The Rebels outshot Langley by a huge 86-44 margin, with Jeff Geyer stopping 38 shots in the Surrey goal.
Max Richards bagged five goals for the winners, doubling his season total to 10 and moving into the team lead in goal scoring. Graeme Harkison was the top point-getter with seven on two goals and five assists. Brad Olson had a six-point night that also included a pair of goals.
Eamon Butler with two goals, Conor Campbell, Garrett Ewasiuk, Tyler Voisey and David Goodwin completed the scoring.
The Rebels were on the short end of a one-sided contest a week earlier in Richmond, losing 13-3 to the Roadrunners. Outshot 69-33, Surrey trailed 3-1 and 8-2 at the period breaks.
Brandon Baldo, Olson and Richards were the goal scorers.
Penalty trouble did in the Rebels in their May 23 contest in Ladner, as the host Delta Islanders netted five goals in the second period – four with the man advantage – in a 9-7 victory.
Surrey led 4-3 after one period, but trailed 8-5 after two. Down 9-5 early in the final frame, and playing a man short once again, the Rebels cut the deficit in half with shorthanded tallies from James Main and Mike Meldrum.
Main, in his first game as a Rebel, and Richards scored twice each for Surrey. Olson and Butler added singles.
Both teams had 46 shots on goal, and seven powerplay opportunities, but special teams were the difference. Delta netted six goals with the man advantage, doubling Surrey’s output.
The Rebels are now at 3-4 (won-lost) and are in eight place in the 11-team league, four points ahead of the 1-7 Burnaby Lakers. The Rebels visit Burnaby Saturday night, before hosting the 4-4 Ridge Meadows Burrards next Monday at 8 p.m. in the Cloverdale Arena.
