In 2011, the Surrey Rebels completed its sixth season in the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League and would like to again thank all of its volunteers, sponsors, fans and the Surrey Lacrosse Association for their support.  While the team struggled during the season and failed to make the playoffs, we still managed to draw good crowds to our home games

We got off to a reasonably good start and hung on to playoff spot for the first half of the season, however for the second straight year a prolonged winless streak made things dicey and despite winning our final two games, this time we were on the outside looking in – finishing two points out of the eighth and final playoff with a record of 6-12-2.

Individual highlights included Brad Olson placing 7th in league assists with 30 and tied for 12th in scoring with 49 points, Max Richards tied for 13th in scoring with 46 points,  and goalie Jeff Geyer finishing 3rd in minutes played, 2nd in shots faced and shots stopped, and 6th in save percentage.  Olson and captain Bobby Tammen were named to the WCJLL All-Star Team, who narrowly lost to the Vancouver Island All-Stars in the Canada Day Classic..

I would like to thank head coach Padraic Lawrence, his assistant coaches Ted Richards, Andrew Lawrence and Bruce Cruickshank, trainer Trent Wittal and our secretary-treasurer Christine Geyer for doing a great job as we steered the Juniors through another difficult season.

We will be graduating five players from the Junior program (Geyer, Tammen, Tyler Voisey, Graeme Harkison and Brett Hall), and we wish them the best in their lacrosse careers.  We expect most of the 17 remaining players to return for the 2011 season and fully expect the majority of the 13 Intermediate Rebels graduates to be out at training camp vying for the vacant roster spots, along with graduates of the Semiahmoo Rock Intermediate program.  Darren St. Pierre will be taking over the reins of the team as Governor, effective October 1st, and will assemble his management team and coaching staff for 2011 in upcoming months

Financially, the team did well in 2011 despite lower than expected registration fees, 50/50 revenues and sponsorship, and the loss of gaming grants making up 1/3 of annual team revenue.  Special thanks go out to our major team sponsor Unitech Construction Management who helped make up for a good portion of the lost gaming revenue.

I would like to express my thanks again to Dennis Ewen and the SLA Executive for their continued support of our senior programs.  Both Christine and I have decided to retire from Surrey Lacrosse after 14 seasons, the past five with the Intermediate Rebels after founding the program in 2007 and the past three with the Junior Rebels, as our son graduates from junior to pursue other senior lacrosse endeavours.
