Rebels lose first period leads

The Surrey Rebels couldn’t finish what they started, and managed to earn just a tie from a pair of West Coast Junior B Lacrosse League games this week.

The Rebels led 6-1 over the Burnaby Lakers Monday night at the Cloverdale Arena, but had to settle for a 7-7 tie. Playing away from home one night later, a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes eventually became a 6-3 loss to the Richmond Roadrunners.

Surrey’s record fell to 5-8-2 (won-lost-tied), and the seventh-place Rebels led the Roadrunners and Ridge Meadows Burrards by two points in a three-team race for the last two playoff positions.

The Rebels were outshot 16-7 in the opening period Tuesday night, but a pair of powerplay goals from Zack Peach had the visitors leading by a goal going into the second period.

Richmond again had a huge edge in shots on goal, and outscored Surrey 4-0 for a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes. The two teams traded third period tallies, with Max Richards netting the goal for the Rebels.

Jeff Geyer had a strong game in goal, stopping 44 of 50 shots. Surrey struggled on the powerplay, failing to score on six extra-man situations, and giving up two shorthanded goals to the Roadrunners.

Against the fifth-place Lakers Monday night in Cloverdale, the Rebels allowed Burnaby to score just 28 seconds into the game then reel off six in a row before the opening period was over.

The offensive production dried up in the second period, and Burnaby took advantage, dominating play and cutting the difference to 6-5.

Tyler Voisey’s second goal of the contest upped the difference to two goals, but Burnaby battled back with two goals in the last eight minutes of play to earn the tie.

Brad Olson with two goals and a pair of assists was Surrey’s top scorer in the game.

Voisey, who added one assist, Peach with two goals and an assist, and Intermediate B callup James Main with three helpers, all had three-point games.

Harrison Mortimore with one goal, his second of the season, completed the scoring.

The Rebels were outshot 47-37 with Geyer making 40 saves in the Surrey net.

The Port Moody Thunder, in second place in the 11-team league with a 10-2-1 record, visit the Cloverdale Arena Monday for an 8 p.m. game against the Rebels.
