Rebels rally to tie Burrards
A solid, two-way effort in the third period allowed the Surrey Rebels to battle from behind an earn a 5-5 tie with the Ridge Meadows Burrards in West Coast Junior Lacrosse League play Monday night at the Cloverdale Arena.
The Rebels got goals from Conor Campbell and Braden Wilkins in the final 20 minutes, each goal pulling Surrey even. The Rebels penalty-killers then killed off a pair of short-handed situations in the final seven minutes to earn the single point in the standings.
Surrey, outshot over the first 40 minutes of play, had a 24-15 edge in shots on goal in the third period but couldn’t net a sixth goal for the win.
The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period, with Bobby Tammen and Sean O’Beirn scoring for the home team. O’Beirn tallied his second of the game in the second period, cutting a Ridge Meadows lead to 4-3.
Brad Olson assisted on three of the five Rebels goals.
Outstanding goaltending by Burrards goalie Derek LeBeuf and Rebels netminder Jeff Geyer kept the scoring down, as each team had 52 shots in the game.
Surrey is now 2-1-1 (won-lost-tied) on the season, tied for third place in the Junior B league with the 2-2-1 Burrards. The Rebels are away from home tomorrow (Saturday) for a clash with the 2-1 Burnaby Lakers.
