The team on the floor won’t be the same, but the Surrey Rebels expect to continue to be among the top teams in the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League (WCJLL).
The Junior B team has lost 10 players to graduation, including three of the top five scorers in the league a year ago. Which means the group of nine returnees will have to step up if the team is to match their 14-5-1 (won-lost-tied) record of 2009.
Curt Callard led the WCJLL last season with 60 goals and 100 points in just 15 games played. Chris Martin (77 points) and Tommy Tran (65) have also graduated out of the junior ranks, taking 122 goals out of the Rebels lineup.
Sean O’Beirn and Tyler Voisey had solid rookie seasons, O’Beirn netting 19 goals and 41 points and Voisey contributing a dozen goals and 37 points.
Returning for their third seasons with Surrey are Colin Derby, Matt Clarke, Cory Cutler, Cam Fielding and Braden Wilkins.
Goaltender Jeff Geyer will also be key to the Rebels success. In his rookie season, Geyer led the league with an 8.86 save percentage, earning a place on the league’s all-star team.
The Rebels still have several positions on the roster to fill, although new head coach Frank Geyer expects as many as six graduates from Surrey’s Intermediate B team to make the team.
The Rebels begin league play Friday, April 23 on the road against the Richmond Roadrunners.
Their first home game is Monday, April 26 when the Langley Warriors visit the Cloverdale Arena.
