Rebels split to stay at .500

A victory over the weakest team, followed by a loss to the first place squad, has kept the Surrey Rebels at .500 in the West Coast Junior B Lacrosse League standings.

The Rebels traveled to Langley last Friday, and handed the winless Warriors a 7-4 loss at the George Preston Recreation Centre. On Monday night at home, Surrey lost 8-2 to the New Westminster Salmonbellies at the Cloverdale Arena.

The Rebels are now at 5-5-1 (won-lost-tied) on the season, in sixth place in the 11-team league.

Langley scored first Friday night, but the Rebels replied with two goals each from Max Richards and Sean O’Beirn for a 4-1 lead midway through the first period.

The Warriors pulled to within 4-3 after 40 minutes, but goals from Brad Olson, O’Beirn with his third of the game, and Cory Cutler vaulted Surrey to the win. Olson also collected three assists for a four-point game.

The Rebels outshot Langley 44-37, with Jeff Geyer making 33 saves in the Surrey goal.

Geyer had another strong outing Monday against New Westminster, making 60 saves. But the 10-1 (won-lost) Salmonbellies cruised to a win, taking period leads of 4-0 and 5-1.

Cutler and Richards were the Surrey goal scorers, with Cory gibbons, Olson, O’Beirn and Geyer earning assists.

- In B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League play, the Surrey Rebels overcame a 6-4 deficit after 40 minutes to defeat the Burnaby Lakers 8-7 last Friday at the Cloverdale Arena.

Andre Culjac and James Main netted two goals each for the Rebels, with Denis Vezina, Brandon Baldo, John McBride and Brandon Sigmund notching one each.
