Rebels start season with a win
A shorthanded Langley Warriors team was no match for the Surrey Rebels in the first game of the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League season.
With only nine runners in the lineup, the Warriors couldn’t keep pace with the home side, and dropped a 15-2 decision Monday night at the Cloverdale Arena.
The Rebels peppered the Langley goal with 66 shots, while the visitors were able to fire just 19 at Surrey netminder Jeff Geyer. The Rebels led 3-1 and 8-1 at the period breaks, before exploding to score seven times in the final 20 minutes.
Three Rebels – Zack Morin, Brad Olson and Sean O’Beirn – notched hat tricks, with Olson adding three assists, O’Beirn setting up two goals and Morin earning one helper.
Cam Fielding had a five-point game on a pair of goals and three assists, while Matt Clarke chipped in with a goal and three assists. Other goals came from Bobby Tammen, Harrison Mortimer and Conor Campbell.
The Rebels scored twice on six powerplay opportunities, and killed off all four shorthanded situations.
Surrey will face-off against the North Shore Indians in their second game of the Intermediate B season. Game time is 8 p.m. Monday at the Cloverdale Arena.
